Summary of Observations from Legislative Session on HB21 SB 12
Observations from Joint Session of Senate and House Committees
(These are specifically my own observations and do not reflect talking points of any group)
1. The public debate was carefully orchestrated… You were well represented if you opposed the bill today in the open hearing. The numbers of people opposing the bills unquestionably outnumbered those advocating. However, the debate was arranged so that the last word was given to those advocating the bill. In fact they were given 45 minutes after the 45 minutes given to opponents. This was important because the strategy used did not allow opponents the opportunity of rebuttal for a number of bogus arguments given by the advocates.
2. The Domestic Partnership Bill is a distinction without a difference…. In other words the bill is designed to grant to same sex partners all the rights and privileges of marriage while avoiding the politically charged language of ‘marriage.’ This is almost a mocking of the people of New Mexico. Same sex marriage could not stand up to a public referendum and so the bill in a sense is an end run. In the name of fairness it is an attempt to silence the majority of voters in our state. It is a way of saying if we call a cat a dog you will not notice the litter box. This thing is marriage plain and simple. HOWEVER…
3. The Senior Adults of our state are being used by the advocates… they paraded one government official after another to the microphone to decry the suffering of our senior citizens who are being denied their rights. How you ask? The idea is that if senior adults marry they lose benefits. However, if they enter a domestic partnership they will be shielded from this ‘devastating’ loss of income. In other words the same sex marriage proponents are riding beneath the cloak seniors to slide this bill by opponents. Who after all, would deny senior adults of their basic necessities. This is a complete fraud. First of all, they do not know if this kind of legal shenanigans will work in court. You basically have state government trying to deceive federal government in the area of benefits. Second, this bill has a horrifying effect…
4. The bill gives “special rights” to Domestic Partners over Married couples... based on the arguments that were raised today, every married couple should get a divorce and then enjoin a ‘domestic partnership’ to give themselves a special status since the federal government seems to FAVOR those who are not ‘married.’ SO MUCH for the FALSE IDEA THAT THIS DOES NOT UNDERMINE MARRIAGE. This bill is a disaster to those who are standing for marriage.
5. The shift of focus is entirely a ruse for the unwillingness of government to deal with real problems… if senior adults need help with defending their benefits then the Roundhouse occupants should turn their attention to that problem …they have no business sneaking the gay agenda in on the backs of the citizens who would most overwhelming vote against a gay marriage bill.
6. If this bill passes it will have a ripple effect that no one can yet measure… This bill will lead to laws and courts and government agencies putting their full weight into the implementation of its intent. In other words, the school system will have to write curriculum that undergirds this definition of family. Opponents will be prosecuted and sued on all kinds of discrimination issues. The courts will be clogged with not only the litigation between failed ‘domestic partners’ but with all the litigation that will ensue against private citizens whose religious convictions will not allow them to cooperate with considering domestic partners as married couples. We have not even dreamt of the ways this will unfold. Religious speech could become criminalized if it involves moral condemnation of sexual behaviors.
7. If domestic partnerships are legalized it will weaken the resolve of those who are struggling with sexual identity. I can write a book on this subject but you can imagine much of it yourself. This is a real issue of morality we have to open our eyes.

Thank You Pastor For Hitting This Issue Head On (HB21, SB12)
Submitted by ChuckAkeley on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 19:07.Pastor: I know you have posted and ministered this matter in love and after seeking the Lord. I am thankful that you are my pastor. I thank you especially for taking the correct position - albeit not the easiest position. May Jesus bless you, bring you wisdom and protect you as the City moves forward in Christ. I also pray in Jesus' name that this initiative will not come to fruition!
Appears to Have Failed...(!)
Submitted by ChuckAkeley on Wed, 02/04/2009 - 05:39.Since the bill(s) appear to have stalled in committee, this initiative appears to be doomed for this legislative session. Praise be unto God! That said, those who are led to pursue this, please keep praying, as the legislative session is not over and this matter will, for sure, be brought forth again during subsequent sessions.
Not So Fast...
Submitted by ChuckAkeley on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 01:27.Well, as of tonight (2/16/2009), a democrat senator broke the tie in committee and the bill is apparently now headed off to the Senate, without a recommendation. Keep praying folks.
Finally, It's Over...
Submitted by ChuckAkeley on Thu, 02/26/2009 - 22:11.Well, the bill died in the Senate today. Thank the Lord!
What a Joke!
Submitted by ABQTones on Fri, 04/17/2009 - 15:04.Of course not-- Why support a loving relationship between two consenting adults?
A better idea is for you to invite to your church a man who lied to the world (including his ardent, trusting believers) about his sexuality... and to this day cannot admit that he's gay... and give him a vehicle to preach about his sins and hypocritically tell people to not be sinners.
Want to embody the loving tenets of Christianity? Don't be a homophobic hypocrite. I don't know how you can live with yourself when you use religion and your church to deny equal rights to two consenting adults while at the same time invite someone like Ted Haggard who engaged in every behavior you've so vehementy objected to.

Submitted by alan on Sat, 04/25/2009 - 00:43.I regret that you are offended at us for our beliefs about same sex relationships. We are biblical Christians and we believe the Bible binds us to the teaching that all sexual relationships outside of male/female unions are neither God's will nor do they constitute marriage. If you feel your rights are violated then you can seek legal redress which as you know provides a variety of options but in New Mexico does not currently involve either marriage or civil unions. A simple power of attorney and care with your personal paperwork will protect your rights as I am sure you know.
Ted Haggard confesses a confused sexuality. He further confesses that he is heterosexual with some gay attractions or attachments. Those attachments he believes had a genesis in preadolescence through an uninvited experience. Most people have some sexual confusion and most struggle with passions that they do not fully understand nor always fully manage. This church is a place that recognizes the difficulty that people have living out their lives in harmony with God and one another. It is unkind of you to charge him with being dishonest about his sexuality. He is perhaps the most honest person I have ever met.
Furthermore, his wife is his most ardent defender when she alone might be his worst accuser. Therefore your charges cannot go unchallenged. They are unkind and represent your own prejudice. Please grant Ted and Gayle Haggard the dignity of admitting that you do not know the full truth of their life together or of Ted's personal inner life.
We wish you well hope to one day resolve these things on earth as in heaven. God bless you.

Submitted by brian on Wed, 11/18/2009 - 22:44.It might surprise you to know that there have been Christians in Egypt since pre-Islamic times. They are known as Coptic Christians or Copts and they live in pockets ceramic tile within the Muslim communities. Many might be deemed as ‘nominal Christians’ by some, with little or no knowledge of the gospel; they simply take pride that they are descended from the Christians who were the original Egyptians before the Muslims took over. Yet they are often prepared to face persecution and insult for the bearing the name ‘Christian’. Other Copts, however, describe themselves as ‘Christian wood flooring Background Believers’ – committed believers who are leading the way in evangelism within their Coptic communities.I travelled down to the rural south where I met a pastor and his wife who have an outreach to young Coptic girls. Many of these girls have joined the youth group, studied the Bible and turned to Christ. However, many of these girls have suffered abuse from family members, and the couple have struggled to show the girls how loved they are by God because of this. Persecution may also start for these Coptic girls when they have a life-changing encounter with Christ and begin living out their newly discovered faith, as this can sometimes anger the Muslim vinyl flooring community. Some are raped by Muslim men so that they are considered ‘soiled’ and then forcibly married to Muslim boys. Some have been kidnapped by Muslim men. Others have been offered a financially comfortable life if they convert to Islam and marry a Muslim, escaping the poverty which most Coptic Christians endure.
The programme to help these young girls is supported with the help of Open Doors. The pastor and his wife take in as many of these Coptic girls as possible, and aim to take them through a course of inner healing. Prayer is needed to support this ministry given the numbers who require inner healing and the opposition to this ministry from both Coptic and Muslim men.
